1.
I believe that all education proceeds by the participation of the individual in the social consciousness of the race. This process begins unconsciously almost at birth, and is continually shaping the individual's powers, saturating his consciousness, forming his habits, training his ideas, and arousing his feelings and emotions. Through this unconscious education the individual gradually comes to share in the intellectual and moral resources which humanity has succeeded in getting together. He becomes an inheritor of the funded capital of civilization. The most formal and technical education in the world cannot safely depart from this general.

모든 교육은 인류의 사회적 의식 (consciousness) 속에 개인이 참여함으로 써 이루어진다. 이 과정은 처음에는 거의 무의식적으로 시작되어, 지속적으로 개인의 힘을 형성해 간다. 그리고 그 사람의 의식에 스며들어 습관을 형성하며, 생각을 훈련시키고, 느낌과 감정을 일깨운다. 이 무의식적인 교육을 통해 개인은 점점 인간이 축적해 왔던 지적, 도덕적 자원을 공유하게 된다. 그리하여 문명 (civilization) 이라는 축적된 자본의 상속자가 된다. 세계에서 가장 공식적이고 기술적인 (technical) 교육은 이러한 일반적인 과정에서 벗어날 수 없다. 벗어난다고 해도 단지 일반적인 과정을 조직화하거나 일부 특정한 부분만을 다르게 만들 수 있을 뿐이다.

I believe that this educational process has two sides⎯one psychological and one sociological; and that neither can be subordinated to the other or neglected without evil results following. Of these two sides, the psychological is the basis. The child's own instincts and powers furnish the material and give the starting point for all education. Save as the efforts of the educator connect with some activity which the child is carrying on of his own initiative independent of the educator, education becomes reduced to a pressure from without. It may, indeed, give certain external results, but cannot truly be called educative. Without insight into the psychological structure and activities of the individual, the educative process will, therefore, be haphazard and arbitrary. If it chances to coincide with the child's activity it will get a leverage; if it does not, it will result in friction, or disintegration, or arrest of the child nature.

이러한 교육적 과정은 두 가지 측면을 가진다. 하나는 심리학적인 측면이고 다른 하나는 사회적인 측면이다. 이는 둘 다 다른 하나에 종속되지 않으며, 어느 것이든 무시할 경우 나쁜 결과를 초래한다. 이 두 측면 중에서 심리학적인 것이 토대 (basis)가 된다. 모든 교육에 있어서 학습 자료와 출발점을 제공하는 것은 아동의 고유한 본능과 힘이기 때문이다. 교육자의 노력이 아이가 교육자와 별개로 수행하는 활동과 관련을 맺지 못할 경우, 교육은 외부의 압력으로 바뀐다. 외부의 압력은 특정한 외적 결과들을 가져 올 수도 있지만 그것은 진정으로 교육적이라고 할 수 없다. 따라서 개인의 심리 구조와 개인의 활동에 대한 통찰 없이 이루어지는 교육적 과정은 무계획적이고 자의적인 것이 될 것이다. 교육적 과정은 아동의 활동에 부합할 때에는 효과가 있지만, 그렇지 않을 때에는 아동의 본성과 마찰을 일으키거나 아동의 본성을 분열, 또는 억제하는 결과를 초래한다.

With the advent of democracy and modern industrial conditions, it is impossible to foretell definitely just what civilization will be twenty years from now. Hence it is impossible to prepare the child for any precise set of conditions. To prepare him for the future life means to give him command of himself; it means so to train him that he will have the full and ready use of all his capacities; that his eye and ear and hand may be tools ready to command, that his judgment may be capable of grasping the conditions under which it has to work, and the executive forces be trained to act economically and efficiently.

민주주의와 근대에 출현한 산업적 상황을 근거로, 지금으로 부터 20년후의 문명이 어떠할지 정확하게 예측하는 것은 불가능하다. 따라서 어떤 정확한 조건에 맞게 아동을 준비시키는 것은 불가능하며, 미래의 삶을 위해 아동을 준비시킨다는 것은 아동에게 스스로를 지휘할 수 있는 권한을 주는 것을 의미한다. 아동에게 스스로를 지휘할 권한을 준다는 것은 아동이 자신의 모든 역량을 충분하게, 손쉽게 사용할 수 있도록 훈련 시키는 것을 의미한다. 즉, 아동의 눈과 귀 손은 이용할 준비를 갖춘 도구가 된다. 그리고 판단이 필요한 상황을 파악할 수 있도록 아동의 판단력을 훈련시키고, 실행에 있어서는 경제적이고 효율적으로 행동하도록 훈련시킨다.
